Historically followers of Christ were referred to as followers of the Way. “Tao” is a Chinese word which is translated, “path.,” “way,” or doctrine. It is a system of ideas which, when studied and followed guides a person’s thoughts and actions.  These thoughts and actions manifest as habits that form the person’s character and, ultimately, their destiny.

The Way of Jesus Christ is a path, a system of ideas, or “truths” that guide one’s thoughts and actions resulting in a transformed character.  What is the Tao of Christ?

The Way of Jesus Christ is simple, it is clear and easily understood.  Jesus lays out four vital truths that form the paving stones of Christ’s Tao.

  1. “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
  2. “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
  3. “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
  4. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another.”

These four scriptures spoken by Jesus Christ are the foundation of the life lived to imitate Him.  The Way of Jesus Christ may be characterized by the following ideas that are rooted in the Bible.

  • Love God with your whole being
  • Care for your neighbor in the same way you care about yourself
  • Life is our purpose, and therefore any Life-affirming productive work we perform honors God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Demonstrate a special affection for your fellow disciples in a way that reminds people of the life and work of Jesus Christ.
